The Malaysian Institute of Economic Research (MIER) hosted a briefing for His Excellency, the Ambassador of Sudan, on 16 February 2026 at the Embassy of Sudan. The session was delivered by Tan Sri Sulaiman Mahbob, Executive Chairman of MIER, on behalf of the institute’s management.

The briefing introduced MIER as an independent economic think tank established in 1985, mandated to provide independent macroeconomic analysis and policy advice. Tan Sri Sulaiman outlined Malaysia’s historical development since independence, highlighting its multicultural social structure and the importance of political power-sharing, national unity, and ethical governance.

The presentation addressed Malaysia’s early social and economic challenges, including rural poverty, inter-ethnic inequality, and regional disparities. Particular emphasis was placed on the New Economic Policy (NEP), which aimed to eradicate poverty, restructure society, and promote inclusive growth through industrialisation, human capital development, and expanded social services.

Tan Sri Sulaiman also discussed Malaysia’s long-term development strategies under Vision 2020, the role of the private sector, major infrastructure and mega projects, and the country’s resilience during global financial crises. Malaysia’s international posture of neutrality, non-interference, and active participation in multilateral institutions such as ASEAN, the United Nations, and the OIC was highlighted.

The briefing concluded by underscoring the importance of effective development planning institutions, strong governance, professional capacity, and sustainable financing mechanisms, including public–private collaboration, as key lessons from Malaysia’s development experience that could offer useful insights for Sudan.
