There have been many calls for the reintroduction of the GST in recent months, leading to statements by the Prime Minister that the GST would be reintroduced only after careful consideration. While the GST avoids cascading taxes, it also has its pitfalls in terms of complexity and delayed tax refunds, which is why it was replaced by the SST as a single-stage tax. A fiscal reform in the form of the Harmonised Sales and Services Tax (HSST) combines the best of the GST and the SST and contains none of the unnecessary complexities.
